An Altar Server is a person who has answered the call from God to assist the priest during the celebration of Mass or any other liturgical celebration.

Who can be an Altar Server?

  • Male or Female;
  • Baptized Catholic;
  • Has received First Penance and First Eucharist;
  • Is in at least the Fourth Grade;
  • Worships on a regular basis.

How do I know if I want to be an Altar Server?

The Church teaches that God calls each of His children to serve in different capacities.  If God is calling you to be an Altar Server, you would have the sense of peace deciding to take the next step in asking to server at His Altar.

What do Altar Servers do?

According to the USCCB guidelines:

  • Servers carry the cross, the processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest, assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.
  • Servers respond to the prayers and dialogues of the priest along with the congregation. They also join in singing the hymns and other chants of the liturgy.

If I become an Altar Server, will I be trained?

Absolutely.  We have a team of qualified individuals who train the Altar Servers and there are normally additional training sessions throughout the year even after you become an installed Altar Server.

How can I become an Altar Server?

If you are interested in becoming an Altar Server, and are under the age of 18, please have a parent contact a priest in the rectory.  If you are over the age of 18, please contact the rectory to schedule an appointment with a priest.
